Much of Intech focused on part tracking, machine monitoring, and machine learning. Connect automated machines to the cloud, and the machines learn how to perform better over time. Automation becomes autonomous. Automated denesting and material handling are prime examples. As machines lift dozens, thousands, and eventually millions of different parts out of a cut sheet, the system can learn how to grasp certain shapes in certain situations.

Most guitarists will already be familiar with this one. It’s perhaps the most obvious solution, and it has been with us the longest. A handful of inventive makers started putting master volume controls on their amps as early as the late ’60s, but this simple knob really came into its own with the Mesa/Boogie Mark I amps of the early ’70s, and then the Marshall Master Model amps—the 2203 and 2204 heads—of the mid-’70s. Soon, it was difficult to find a serious guitar amp that didn’t have a master volume there at the end of the control panel.

This has the benefits for shops as well, who are trying to prep bikes with multiple power meters and groupsets around, to keep track of what bike is what. So it’s more than just a consumer-focused thing.  And of course, it’ll allow you to do firmware updates from the app as well.

Many of your readers will have NO need to upgrade their cranksets, as they’re already rocking a power meter, and those upgrade kits that are available NOW without the cassette still look mighty tasty. Granted, I’d rather spend force money, but it doesn’t hurt to dream.

I must stress the beefiness of these brake arms. Their stout build seems impervious to flex, and my seatstays bow outward long before the brakes show even a hint of give.

To me it made little difference. I rode the bike with 700c wheels and tires between 30 to 40mm wide and there were no dramatic handling differences. The standover height was noticeable but not bothersome since I primarily ride cyclocross bikes.

If you trigger the Bosch, you can get back up and running very quickly by flipping the dual-activation cartridge. It will cost you around $99 to get another one—also good for two more events. That’s $50 per event by the numbers. Your blade will continue to work and does not even need to be removed. A safety event on the SawStop will cost you around $69 for the replacement brake cartridge plus a new blade. It takes some finagling to remove the brake from the SawStop, but the included tools will help you pry it and the damaged blade off the table saw.

My first appreciation of cars came when my first boss took me for a drive in an old air-cooled Porsche 911 in Sydney. I don’t remember what model year it was, but I do remember I became addicted to all things automotive from that day onwards. I’m an enthusiastic car nut who geeks out over tuned supercars, obscure classic race cars, automotive memorabilia and just about anything else car related.

Out back, Smith sourced Ford’s new 5.2-liter Aluminator 52XS crate engine. Rated at 580 horsepower, it’s basically the "Voodoo" engine from the Mustang GT350 with a cross-plane crank and appropriate camshafts for the different firing order. Smith flipped the intake manifold around to put the intake at the rear. To mount the engine three inches lower in the chassis, Smith swapped the Aluminator’s oil pan for a wide Moroso oil pan and windage tray from 5.0-Mustang. To run the Aluminator, Smith chose Ford Performance Parts’ Controls Pack. Mustang mounts isolate engine vibrations from the chassis.

Porsche RWB #1 in Mignonette Green. Wide body hand crafted and installed by the famous Nakai-san of Rauh-Welt Begriff. This particular 911, known as Pandora One, was the first RWB Porsche built in the United States. Unlike many RWB’s, this car has the performance to back up it’s looks. A 3.6L flat six engine with a custom FFTEC turbo kit provides over 450hp. This RWB has been backdated to the styling of an early long hood 911.

The SM465 and SM420 are both great transmissions. The SM465 offers a 6.55:1 ratio First gear and the SM420 offers an ultra-low 7.05:1 ratio First gear. However, both transmissions have their drawbacks. First and foremost is that they are essentially three-speed transmissions when you are driving on the street. You generally will never find much use for the low First gear on the pavement. The gaps between the three gears on both transmissions can make for quirky driving on the street. Something else to consider is that the SM420 is old and it is getting harder to find parts for. Also, with some adapters the front driveshaft clearance can be a problem on the SM420 when used with a Spicer 18. The SM465, while much newer and easier to find parts for, is massive and hangs down several inches below the framerails. You should check the actual dimensions before pulling the trigger on an SM465 swap in a small Jeep. If you are set on a four-speed manual truck transmission, you might want to consider a T-18 transmission. The T-18 is extremely adaptable, readily available, you can find them with a 6.32:1 First gear, and it’s pretty compact for its strength and durability. In some areas a good swappable version of the T-18 can be difficult and expensive to locate, but Herm the Overdrive Guy (hermtheoverdriveguy.com) offers several versions of the T-18 rebuilt with an adapter for a very reasonable price. The company has other low-geared rebuilt truck transmissions available too, if you decide to go a different route.
