The models that ended up in the test are pretty similar. They feature brushless motors and have 16-inch bars (with one 18-incher), and all are available in kits with one battery and a charger ranging in price from ~$210 to a little over $400. There are other battery-fueled chainsaws available at higher price points, but we focused on the more affordable range for this shootout. So you could really say that what we’re dialing in is the best battery-powered chainsaw under $400 (ish).

Dust collection can seem like an afterthought for jobsite table saws. The fact that you’re outside, often on an unoccupied site, negates the need to collect your dust. But breathing that stuff doesn’t do your lungs any favors. That’s why dust collection is so important. Of course, if you’re working inside or in an occupied structure, collecting all that dust will make the cleanup part of your day easier to deal with. Since we’re not talking about concrete dust regulations, even a standard shop vac will be a good bet to help contain the mess.

The Kobalt and both 36V Makita saws used 5.0 Ah packs, both Festool and Hilti 5.2 Ah, the Bosch 18V 6.0 Ah, and the Metabo used a 6.2 Ah pack. The remaining DeWalt, both Milwaukee saws, and the Ridgid all had 9.0 Ah packs. The 20V Max DeWalt also used a FlexVolt battery which is rated at 9.0 Ah at that voltage.

My car is 20 years old. Looks and works like new as very well maintained. What we need are much tighter roadworthiness and emissions tests for licensing.

A little unusual for Bosch’s larger tools, it comes in reasonably light weight at 60 pounds – only Skilsaw and Ryobi posted lighter weights. Like Milwaukee in our 18V impact driver shootout, the Bosch 4100 didn’t really stand out from the crowd in features and performance. It’s solid consistency in every area we tested earned it the top spot in the class.

When determining the best battery-powered chainsaw, runtime isn’t everything since there are multiple watt-hour configurations in the group. When we boil it down to how efficiently each saw uses the watt hours it has, things become a little more clear. The big deal is that it evens out the differences in voltages and amp hours. It is certain that Watt hours affects run-time in lithium-ion batteries. This is especially helpful when deciding if you should jump into a battery platform with a higher capacity battery available than the one that comes with the kit.
