Older panel benders require operators to switch out tooling manually. But like more modern press brake setups, panel benders have evolved to incorporate automated tooling changeovers as well, minimizing the machine operator’s interaction.

Coolest detail: Tiny seatstays. One of English’s signature details are pencil-thin seatstays, which he uses for more than just visual impact. English is a mechanical engineer, and that knowledge is put to use crafting his bikes. A rear triangle’s lateral stiffness is handled by the chainstays, triangulated by the rear hub. The seatstays only see compressive forces and, “a steel tube has immense strength when loaded in compression,” he says. “So I can use small-diameter, thin-wall tubing for the lowest weight.” English is clear that the small stays are not a way to improve vertical compliance: “A triangle is by definition a rigid structure, and there is not enough loading in the seatstays to cause the steel tubing to bend in a way that would provide any measurable deflection at the dropouts.” Instead, English uses sloping top tubes and lots of exposed seatpost. “The unsupported length can flex and passively absorb some vibrations,” he says.

Galvanization is performed before the friction material is attached to the backing plate. By galvanizing the surface between the backing plate and friction material, the possibility of corrosion that can cause edge lift and delamination is potentially reduced.

“We used to bend everything on a press brake. We would have an operator set them up, bend a couple of pieces, and then change over the tooling for another job,” Eaton said. “What really drew us to the panel bender was the setup time and the bending speed. It was completing bends in 40 to 45 seconds, whereas it was taking the press brake operator a minute to a minute and a half.”

Train operations require that the crew in the lead locomotive maintain constant communications with the rear locomotives or the device on the rear car of the train. When these communications fail, the train is restricted to 30 mph, and on grades of more than 2%, the train is required to stop. The longer the train, the more these communications fail. This loss of communications is very common when trains go around curves or go over the tops of mountains.
