The Soul is DeAnima’s gravel racing bike. The Italian-made carbon frame offers 40mm of tire clearance. And, of course, custom geometry and paint are available.

The DOM boss tubing isn’t anything special. It’s simply heavy-wall DOM tubing. I purchased inexpensive remnants from the local Industrial Metal Supply (industrialmetalsupply.com). The company keeps short sections of various diameters and wall thicknesses on hand. If you can’t find the tubing locally, you can buy it online from companies like Speedy Metals (speedymetals.com). The company sells the heavy-wall DOM tubing in 1-inch increments, or you can purchase pieces in 12-, 18-, 24-, 36-, 48-, and 60-inch lengths. You’ll need around 20-24 inches to fabricate the four boss-style mounts needed for a traditional Saginaw steering box. I used 7/8-inch 0.499-wall for three of the mounts and 1-inch 0.250-wall tube for one of the mounts. I needed a bit more diameter on the upper forward mount to make contact with the frame for welding. This tubing essentially has a 1/2-inch hole and the steering box mounting bolts are 7/16 inch. The bolts are a loose fit, so they don’t corrode and become stuck, and the box will not wobble around in the mounts. The larger bolt hole gives you some room for error and warpage when welding. You could very easily use thinner tubing with something like a 0.120-wall thickness, but you’ll need to fabricate additional brackets to attach the bosses to the frame. I wanted to keep it simple, even if it added a bit more weight.

We should pay a toll on all major roads UNLESS we have two or more people per vehicle. That works well in other places. Have you noticed during the traffic jams/morning commute that nearly all cars have but one occupant?

On the other hand, tool storage on the SawStop JSS-MCA is simply brilliant. Adding to the convenient side storage is a tray that sits just under the table. It’s accessible when you extend the table to its full rip capacity. Inside, you can safely stores items like a replacement brake cartridge, the three included hex wrenches, and the miter guide. On the back you find a place for an extra blade and the two blade wrenches. They’re held securely, but can be released quickly and easily.

Chainsaws are known for leaking oil while sitting because the daily heating and cooling cycle of their surroundings shrink and expand a plastic tank like a rudimentary pump. Some of our saws were messier than others. After sitting awhile in the shop, the Kobalt and especially the Greenworks Pro saw had noticeable puddles underneath them. If put away with a full tank, the Greenworks Pro would soon leak a huge amount of oil—as in ounces. Adding to the messiness of the Kobalt, the vent hole in the top of its oil tank cap freely drips oil whenever the saw is tilted sideways for adjusting the bar and chain.

Almost 20 years ago, the owner of Datum Storage Solutions asked Brett Eaton and his co-workers to check out a video he had seen about a bending machine that he thought could help them. Eaton, then a press brake operator, saw the same potential in the panel bender that the owner saw.

Coolest detail: Twin strut wishbone. A wishbone design is a common way to connect the seatstays to the seat tube on bikes of all kinds. A twin wishbone, however, is a more unique detail. According to Mike Yakubowicz, DeAnima’s North American Importer, the design was chosen for DeAnima’s Soul gravel frame because the wider stance improves lateral stiffness while simultaneously improving compliance and vibration damping. “The stays essentially wrap around the seat tube, as opposed to contacting it in the center, which aims to direct vibration away from the seat tube and seatpost, and through the top tube.”

For that reason, they do often seem to work best in amps that generate the majority of their signature tone in the preamp stages already. Also, using a master volume to achieve extremely low volume levels—but with a heavily cranked-up overdriven sound from a maxed-out gain control in the preamp—can often result in a fizzy, bees-in-a-tin-can tone.

A travesty of the arts and totally unlike the rich cultural heritage of the Fiat-Chrysler-Daimler-Dodge-AMC-Plymouth-Rambler-Eagle Corporation.
